Du´an Karstlands

China holds many secrets and mysteries, not least of which are the huge areas of the country that for social and political reasons have remained largely unexplored. Accessing these areas is a challenge in itself, even before the ‘regular’ challenges of cave diving in remote locations from a logistical and safety perspective.

The Du´an Karst Exploration Project, in the Guangxi region of China aims to scope the exploration of the 241 kilometre long Du’an river. The Du’an river is called the first subterranean river in China and the first to be named academically according to China Daily.

Jani Niskanen and Melanie Cristau have garnered nearly 28 hours in water time exploring the caves in this area and building relationships with local dive communities, even adding to their training to prepare for future projects. Interrupted by the travel restrictions associated with the covid19 pandemic, they plan on continuing identification and exploration of this immense karst system.

In addition they have dived the Stone mine in Fangshan, Beijing, perhaps the only non Chinese divers to have done so.

Project Antillothrix is a multi-organizational partnership formed to conduct biodiversity surveys and excavations of paleontological cave sites in the Dominican Republic. Together, researchers and divers from the City University of New York (CUNY), Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), Museo del Hombre Dominicano (MHD), and the Dominican Republic Speleological Society (DRSS) have documented and collected a trove of vertebrate fossils for study and preservation since the inception of this collaboration in 2011.

↓ Location
Guangxi Du´an, China
↓ Goals

The principal goal of the 2016 expedition was to implement photogrammetric methods within flooded caves where paleontological excavations are planned or underway. This was accomplished by collecting hi-resolution digital pictures of important sites within the cave, which were then processed using a high-power computer and photogrammetry software to generate 3-dimensional models of the fossil beds.
